This TED talk by Wendy Suzuki gives us another dose of reasons to get up and move.
It makes sense – for us to survive as a species our memory and creativity are key. We need to remember how to find food, where danger lurks, and have the ability to problem solve and make new discoveries.
How smart that our body is hardwired to improve these things with movement. We were designed with a built in system – while foraging for food or running away from danger we had better problem solving skills and could remember what helped us survive.
In today’s world we still need those quality’s to survive – but the movement is not built in.
Since the brain has a negativity bias – left alone it will focus on what is wrong rather than what is right – taking charge of our thoughts when we exercise boosts these benefits. Now you might not want to say the positive phrases out loud as she describes in the video – but simply focusing thoughts on what is positive and good while exercising can only boost the mind/body benefits of movement.
Whether it is a quick 10 minute lunch break walk, a 30 minute strength circuit or a 60 minute intense workout – we can boost the benefits by training the brain as well as the body.
- Increased neurochemical that promotes brain cell repair

- Boosts decision making skills
- Promotes growth of new nerve cells and blood vessels
- Improves multitasking and planning
